Artists and Absent Gallery

ABSENT GALLERY is honored to announce that it will present the works of collaborating artist Lei Jianhao in the Spotlight section of the Moordn Art Fair 2025.
Taking Lei Jianhao’s video installation The Decisive Moment as a starting point, Absent Gallery introduces a critique of anthropocentrism into public space, allowing it to unfold and evolve freely.
This work, generated by a reinforcement learning model, actively breaks free from the constraints of pictographic symbols, entrusting itself to randomly selected branches and unpredictable natural forces. It dismantles the techno-utopian fantasy of “total control,” presenting what can be termed a “post-digital sublime.” Its creative process subverts the logic of traditional art production—the artist is no longer the sole creator, as AI, trees, and weather all become co-participants in the act of creation. Here, the unpredictability arising from the interaction between machine logic and organic systems thoroughly blurs the boundary between control and loss of control, and the “completion” of the work lies precisely in its inevitable fall and fragmentation.
In the public space, weathered shipping crates engage in a vivid dialogue with screens that display the real-time status of the work, unfolding discussions on post-structuralism and post-humanism. The former documents the hidden journey of human-made objects before their arrival in the space, while the latter reveals the seemingly perpetual “incompleteness” of art, suggesting that interpretation remains suspended until the arrival of the “decisive moment” of impact. This dual narrative invites viewers to linger in the tension between control and chaos, presence and absence, completion and dissolution.

Jianhao Lei (b.1998)
LEI Jianhao(b.1998)Born in Changsha, based in Beijing.
Graduated from the Affiliated High School of China Central Academy of Fine Arts (2017), China Central Academy of Fine Arts (Bachelor’s degree in 2021, Master’s degree in 2024), he explores the intricate connections between reality, fiction, materiality, and technology. His practice consistently revolves around the axis of technological system failures, constructing an ongoing dialogue between matter and technology. In his works, he frequently employs early neural network algorithms, natural minerals, plants, found objects, and even natural environments, showcasing a distinctive materiality and technological sensibility. Through experimental creative processes, Lei Jianhao continuously investigates how emerging technologies can expand the boundaries of perception and redefine the relationship between humans and the world. His works often manifest as dynamic, uncertain processes rather than singular conclusions. His pieces have been exhibited multiple times in international art institutions and spaces.

The Decisive Moment
The artificial object created by the reinforcement learning model, which rejects representational forms, is placed on a large tree branch randomly selected by the program and integrated into a complete ecosystem.
Strong winds, lightning, hail, torrential rain—unpredictable factors may cause it to fall. The moment the object descends and makes contact with the ground, the artwork is complete.
A transport wooden crate, marked with emblems and scratches, supplements its earlier trajectory, while a display screen honestly reveals the unfinished state of the work at this moment.

Chimera presents a machine's attempt to approximate natural forms. The upper part of the installation draws from natural stalactites, while the lower section takes shape from a reinforcement learning model halted prematurely during its generative phase. This model was trained to continuously learn from classical sculptures, yet the intervention sought to stop it from approaching refinement and intelligence, leaving it as an untamed, uncarved, and twisted object—or perhaps this randomness is closer to the true will of the machine.
By meticulously simulating the growth environment of a limestone cave, this grafted entity is provided with conditions in the exhibition space that closely resemble its original habitat. A calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) solution drips from above into a water tank, reacting with the air to deposit white solid calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) on its surface, forming unpredictable shapes and gradually neutralizing the disjointedness of the splicing.
Chimera strives to become a natural object and continue growing.

An old-fashioned PAR light flickers irregularly above, switching on and off at random intervals, while another PAR light opposite records the rhythm of its flickers. Through continuous learning of the recorded data, it eventually attempts to predict and synchronize its own switching pattern with the first light's erratic behavior.

A hand-polished metal plate is imbued with unique directional textures, its surface exhibiting dynamic luster variations when viewed from different angles. The two-dimensional footage captured during a circumferential filming process is converted into volumetric data, where machine vision misinterprets the play of light and shadow as three-dimensional deformations, generating virtual raised structures.
These algorithmically reconstructed volumetric forms are then printed and transferred back onto the original metal surface. Under specific lighting conditions, the virtual protrusions interfere with the plate's innate reflective qualities, creating an optical ambiguity that blurs the boundary between the physical and the virtual—rendering the distinction between real and simulated textures indistinguishable.
